I've been doing great with a tweaked single KLH super cheapo 10" powered sub for years. Bought it at Costco.You don't have to have the best stuff in the world to get reasonably good sound in the sub category. The issue is more placement.
So a pair at that price seems to me to be a good potential investment. No bragging rights, mind you, but still....
Had I the money I'd invest in the matching VRS/1 sub from Von Schweikert to go with my VR1 speakers. I've auditioned it and it's wonderful! REally matched beautifully inside and out and it's also the smallest sub I've ever seen. But that's another $1600! Not quite your $400/pair.
