Arcam amps are brigther and more detailed than HK's in general. I've owned the Arcam 8r and other HK integrated and power amps in the past and was able to compare the two. I can attest to the statement I just made. However, the hk1400 may be the best Harman Kardon amp I've ever owned. It is more neutral and detailed than the other HK amps but probably less so than the Arcam 8r. I'm on a very tight budget changing the speakers seems to make more sense at this point.BTW the hk1400 is considered to be a legendary amp in the UK. I remember reading glowing reviews about it in the mid 90's. The HK1400 seems to be extremely rare in the US and I was lucky emough to pick it up on ebay for $50.
