I recently bought a pair of old magnepan 1.5qr's that I think are the best value I've ever gotten. I bought them from a dealer so I paid $625 but they usually go for less in classified ads. They are in a bedroom system and are doubling as computer speakers. They are fairly warm sounding but still have better detail and clarity than box speakers in this price range. They don't go super loud or have a ton of bass but they aren't sorely lacking in these areas either.
