I just replaced the surrounds on a free pair of Vandersteen 2c's. I guess these are famous for disintegrating foam surrounds. I read the online tutorials that recommended shimming the voice coil, but I had three objections.1. The dust cap is breathable cloth and if it is replaced with one of the paper or plastic dust caps that Parts Express gives you it would change the speaker characteristics.
2. If the voice coil is jammed in place the foam could be off center and you would never know until the glue dries and you pull the shims out. Then its too late.
3. I didn't want to butcher the speaker any more than necessary.
I trimmed a styrofoam cup until it just fit over the dust cap. With the speaker facing up, I put a bubble level on top of the cup. Actually the bottom of the cup because it was upside down. Then I supported the speaker basket and tilted it so that the bubble was exactly level with the voice coil centered. The way I could tell it was centered was that I could tip the cone an equal distance in any direction (watching the bubble) before the voice coil hit the gap in the pole pieces.
Then I glued down the foam to the basket. It was interesting to watch that the slightest tension in the foam on one side of the basket would tilt the cone off center. The bubble level gave a very sensitive indication of the alignment. I carefully pressed down the edges of the foam around the basket while I watched the bubble.
The results were excellent. The speakers work great with not a hint of voice coil rubbing. Having done this once I think it is probably overkill. There was so much space in the gap that I think you could just eyeball it and do an acceptable job. But if I do it again I will still use the bubble method because its not that difficult and it gives me confidence that I'm doing it right.
Good luck with your project.
