The early 801'F's were good, for sure.
But, when the Matrix series arrived, the classical recording industry embraced them right away.
The Matrix cabinet, ported vs sealed bass, and the better tweeter and improved midrange driver make a BIG difference.I kept my old 801' F's to compare to the Matrix 801's, and the matrix 801's are better, much better.
The older 801 F's are more forgiving of shitty equipment/recordings, true.
But once you get good stuff in front of a Matrix 801, look out!Even after all these years, a Matrix 801 is still a world class speaker.
I know, I currently own 12 other pairs of speakers to compare it to!
