Tom,Your description sounds like a bass resonance problem in the listening room, and/or all of the soft damping material soaking up too much of the high frequencies. Were they filled with lead shot? The setup in the room could have been tuned to some other speakers at some point, and not ideal for the VR4-jrs.
I have a pair hooked to an RA Opus CDP, BAT pre and BAT amp, with Cardas cabling all around and I am very pleased with the sound. I did do quite a bit of positioning and room tweaking, and they are in my basement--surrounded by concrete. I suspect that I would have more trouble controlling the bass if I were on a suspended floor. Some of my room tweaks were immediately noticeable, so it is not surprising to me that the sound could be messed up quite a bit by the wrong setup.
Don't know about the Spendors, but my VR4-jrs easily bested a pair of Gallo Ref III's in my setup to my ears.
