Re: Seeking $5K speaker recommendation

Your friend says he likes his current speakers and is a little vague as to why he wants new ones. He just seems to think he could do better, and not being familiar with his Thiel 1.2's, I couldn't say. The fact that he is considering, among other things, the Paradigm Studio 100 and other larger speakers would probably indicate he would like something larger with deeper bass response. He also seems to consider his Thiel's an upgrade to the Studio 20s. Anyway, if the bass is the main problem, then the most cost effective remedy would be a good subwoofer.

There are quite a number of good speakers out there and I think some others have already suggested some other likely prospects, many of which I have not heard. I would strongly suggest he look at the Paradigm Reference Signature S8 instead of the Studio 100, and indeed, that may be what he meant. The S8 is really a first class speaker, but the list price is slightly above $5000. (The little Signature S2 has achieved Class A Restricted LF status in Stereophile.) But the medium sized Signature S4 is less expensive and if more bass is needed, a good subwoofer could be added, still keeping within his price range.

The PSB Platinum Series also appear to be excellent. I was not able to hear them under very good circumstances but the Platinum M2 and T8 did sound very smooth and should be very fine speakers (and some good reviewers report they are).

I heard the Thiel PCS speaker a while ago and it was very impressive indeed, but it would need a subwoofer to do the deep bass.
