Thiel designs his speakers pretty carefully, and the crossover network is probably designed specifically for the tweeter they use, which means it may include impedance compensation, frequency contouring, etc. which is specific to that driver. Substituting a ribbon driver with different characteristics will certainly CHANGE the sound, but it may not improve it, and in fact is more likely to degrade the sound.
