I thought the Rickie Lee Jones presentation was sensational.
Almost as good: "SOUNDSTAGE presents The New York Dolls."The Dolls came along when my musical interests had diverged from rock (thanks to Ella and Frank). I had the feeling at that time that rock had entered the rehashed, warmed-over phase. After all, the Beatles and Stones and Doors and Zep and Hendrix had just about said it all, hadn't they?
I have to admit I was mighty floored by the Dolls. Not my cup of tea, mind you. But now, at least, I know what all the fuss was about.
Another top-notch hi-def presentation ... BUT:
The direction did not measure up to the Jones performance. This was one very antsy director -- lots of gratuitious zoom in's and outs, quick cutting for almost every drumbeat. I thought I was watching a BIG PRIZE AWARD on the Price is Right!
