Thanks again for sending it, its defintely going to be a good addition to the bulging racks of plastic.
To start with I am going to have to show some of you guys how to do covers for CDs when you burn them.
Now on to the music.
I assume this to have been remastered since the package from which it was taken includes a 5.1 mix of the album.
The sound is pretty damn good considering the sometimes mass jamming and the age of the recording.
Some of the tracks sound like live studio jams, but with tremendous restraint amongst the guitarists. Crosby seems happy to have his voice relatively low in the mix and it gives those tracks a definite band feel. Harmony singing is spot on in that Crosby vein that can be heard through The Byrds and CSN. Listening now it makes me wonder what would have happened if Crosby had stayed in The Byrds and they had made the supposed electric jazz/psychedelic album that eventually became Notorious Byrds Brothers. Crosby's ghost hangs over the non-country tracks on that disc and oh well 40 years on and its too late now!
Other tracks have massed wordless voicings in a beyond CSN almost chorale effect and very cool they are too.
A couple of the tracks sound like CSN (and possibly Y) in the vocals and there are a couple of tracks of Crosby's (and that whole social circle's) paranoid politics, but generally it comes across as a very good disc.
For me, holding it back from total rave greatness is that a number of the tracks seem to be merely faded out while the music seems to go on, as if the writing is unresolved. On the jams this is frustrating and I am sure Crosby could have let them play for a while, but maybe back then with restrictions on LP length there was a real problem with that.
Not a perfect album, but a rich and rewarding one and for far more than nostalgic reasons. Possibly the best of the records that that crowd started putting out across the demarcations of band names and recording contracts.
If only I could remember why I didn't like it then...
