Mollie O'Brien "Big Red Sun", a nice little album

I've been a fan of her husband, Tim O'Brien, for a long long time, and while rumaging through the $3.99 used CD bin I came across Mollie O'Brien's "Big Red Sun". I expected some bluegrass/newgrass music, or even old timey, but was surprised to hear it was so eclectic with electric guitars and drums. I'm not even sure what genre of music you would label this one, but its a conglomeration of rock, folk, a little countrified, and bluesy. Since she's from Colorado (the land of snow right now), I'll call it the "Colorado Sound". She has a good strong singing voice with decent range. Her arrangements of all the cover tunes are engaging and do justice for the songs (yes, the cover tune, "Big Red Sun" is the Lucinda Williams song). The album's flavor reminds me of some Robin and Linda Williams' albums I've heard and, in fact, Robin and Linda are backup vocals throughout the album. Nick Forester, formerly from Hot Rize, is a great guitar player who can rock out, play straight blues, as well as bluegrass; very tasteful and knows the space between the notes is as important as the notes themselves. Produced by Charles Sartwelle, also from Hot Rize. I was lucky to find this for $3.99, but the album is so good and pleasing to listen to, I'd recommend it at any price.
