Apart from being responsible for a handful of the best tracks ever laid down, and then of course imploding by sacking the best writer in the band, The Sex Pistols were as much a "statement" as a band.
Malcolm was always a situationist right back to being in Paris during the student riots of 68.
A bit like putting Marcel Duchamp's Fountain in a museum (it was an upside down urinal) I can't think of a good parallel for proposing them for it.
I think Steve was interested but the chances of getting John would probably be directly proportional to how much fun he thought he would have going there... and he was never that much a fam of most music. I seem to remember that his taste ran to Beefheart, Tim Buckley, Faust and reggae.
The Clash always wanted to be the new Rolling Stones but The Sex Pistols were a different kettle of fish.
