In South San Francisco, birthplace of biotech, Genentech celebrated its 30th birthday on Monday with a four- to five-hour concert featuring (in order) the Foo Fighters, Bob Dylan, the Black-Eyed Peas and the Eagles. DNA molecule-man James Watson, whose discoveries made the work of Genentech possible, was an honored guest, along with a roster of patients -- some of whom have been seen in recent ads -- who have recovered from illness thanks to the company. The company's 10,000 employees, their mates and children were invited. This sounds like such a great gift to the workers ... but having had some experience in a working environment, I asked the company's Debra Charlesworth whether anyone had found reason to complain. "I haven't heard anything,'' she said. "We cleaned up really quickly. It was a great time.'' Casting around on the Net, however, I found one whiner had appended his remarks to a Rolling Stone online report of the event: Dylan "didn't say a single word to the crowd, came in, sang his set and left,'' he wrote. "His old raspy incoherent voice was a sad and bitter way to see him live.'' Say, Mr. Malcontent: Dylan is Dylan is Dylan. You want audience engagement, go see Chuckles the Clown.
