I agree. However the Bakersfield sound and any country from the 50's is A-OK in my book. Many of the "country" stars of today are just playing R&R, it is no longer pure country. The music of the Appalachias, having derived from Irisk/Scottish/English folk traditions and having evolved into Bluegrass and to a large extent, by adding that pedal steel, into early country is a pure and honest music.

Blues is also a pure music, but because of the racial divides of the 1800s and early 19th century it developed its own style and song base.
Bluegrass, BTW, has crossed back to Ireland and somewhat helped effect the changing face of Irish music, IMHO a richer and more intense form of Irish tunesmithing has occurred.
This cross-breeding can be heard to a very fine degree in an album that I treasure greatly-
Bringing It All Back Home-Music from the BBC TV series. I have it as a 2 CD and a 4LP set, it has since been split into 2 single volumes.
It is a rich and exciting mix of Irish and American players and singers playing together in various combinations, It happens to have the saddest song I have ever heard on it...Kilkelly----and a pair of drop dead gorgeous Emmylou/Mary Black/Dolores Keane songs.
Whew....
