Bob Dylan`s 'Modern Times' takes the No. 1 spot on European Top 100 Albums

Bob Dylan`s 'Modern Times' (Columbia) ascends from 2 to 1 on European Top 100 Albums, fuelled by a No. 2 debut in Italy and climbs of 3 to 2 in Holland and 6 to 5 in Wallony. It also holds at No. 2 in the fellow Belgian region of Flanders. Dylan`s 2001 album 'Love & Theft' also debuted at No. 2 on the pan-European chart, holding there a second week before falling away from 4 to 13 to 22.
'Modern Times' takes over at the top from Iron Maiden`s 'A Matter of Life and Death' (Capitol/EMI), despite that album`s latest debuts at No. 1 in Sweden, No. 2 in Hungary and No. 3 in Greece. 'Matter' also holds at No. 1 in Finland but falls from 1 to 6 in Germany, from 1 to 3 in Italy, from 2 to 4 in Norway, from 4 to 17 in the United Kingdom, from 4 to 7 in Spain and from 5 to 9 in France.
Dylan`s achievement in rising to the top of the Europe-wide chart is underlined by the fact that labelmate Beyonce "only" debuts at No. 3 with 'B`Day.' That`s also where the album opens its U.K. account on opening sales of 35,000 units, well-below those of 2003`s 'Dangerously In Love,' which topped the British chart for five weeks and Top 100 Albums for three. 'B`Day' is new at No. 2 in Switzerland, No. 3 in Ireland, No. 5 in Spain and Germany, No. 5 in Holland and No. 10 in Italy. The single "Deja Vu," featuring Jay-Z, dips from 4 to 6 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, on which it peaked at No. 2.
The EMI compilation 'Lover of Life, Singer of Songs: The Very Best of Freddie Mercury,' released to mark what would have been the singer`s 60th birthday Sept. 5, opens at No. 5 on Top 100 Albums. Its most notable performance is a No. 1 debut in Italy. It also arrives at No. 6 in Spain and in the United Kingdom, the latter on sales of 23,000 copies, according to charts compiler, the Official U.K. Charts Company. A remix of 'Love Kills,' Mercury`s 1984 hit, has been released in some European territories, and charts at No. 4 in Spain and No. 8 in Italy.
Audioslave`s 'Revelations' (Epic/Interscope) debuts at No. 7 on Top 100 Albums, securing entries at No. 2 in Finland, No. 5 in Norway, No. 8 in Germany and No. 12 in the United Kingdom. Further afield, it`s new at No. 1 in both Australia and New Zealand.
German pop-rock group Pur`s 'Es Ist Wie Es Ist' (Capitol) opens at No. 9 on the pan-European list, thanks to a No. 1 debut in its home market. That mirrors the performance of its 2003 predecessor 'Was Ist Passiert?'
Justin Timberlake`s "SexyBack" (Jive), which assumed leadership of the Eurochart last week, gets a second week at No. 1, climbing from 5 to 1 in Norway and debuting at No. 3 in Italy and No. 4 in Sweden. His album 'Futuresex/Lovesounds' was released throughout Europe on Monday (Sept. 11).
But Timberlake faces a substantial challenge for next week`s top spot from Robbie Williams, whose 'Rudebox' (Chrysalis) races from 83 to 2 on the Eurochart. In the United Kingdom, the track climbs from 30 to 4 on sales of 24,000, and makes some lofty debuts, at No. 1 in Germany, Italy and Switzerland, No. 2 in Finland, No. 5 in Austria and No. 6 in Spain.
Also climbing well on the Eurochart is Scissor Sisters` "I Don`t Feel Like Dancin`" (Polydor), co-written by and featuring Elton John, which rises from 15 to 4 after ascending from 4 to 1 in the United Kingdom, with sales of 66,000. It`s new at No. 3 in Norway, No. 4 in Switzerland and jumps from 11 to 3 in Ireland. "Promiscuous" (Geffen) by Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland is up from 18 to 5 overall, climbing from 15 to 3 in the United Kingdom, from 18 to 5 in Ireland and from 9 to 7 in Germany.
