I bought all five Deluxe Edition SACDs and have spent the past two weeks listening to them. I have a SACD player, but have also listened to them in my car and on my computer. They have not bored me. I do not believe I've ever listened to Question of Balance or To Our Childrens Childrens Children, so they may grow on me in time. I've listened to In Search of the Lost Chord over a hundred times.
Overall, I'm not pleased with the drums or the trebble. The drums often sound like they are behind a thick curtain and the trebble is there and smooth, but probably drops off at 15K or so. It just lacks the overtones and crispness of extended trebble.
The dynamic range of the SACD layer is outstanding. The quiet parts are quieter than the CD, and the loud parts are louder than the CD. This give life to the sound. The CD layer sounds flat in comparison. I listened to my record of In Search, and the record still has better dynamics than the SACD layer.
Soncially, In Search seemed the weakest. It does not seem as clean or dynamic as the others. However, the SACD layer is clearly better than the CD layer in everyway, and the CD layer of the Deluxe Edition is clearly superior to my CD of In Search. So both the CD and SACD layer of In Search are still a step up from the CD.
Well, after two weeks of listening to the five albums, here's my personal assessment on a 5 point scale of the SACD stereo layer:
Days of Future Passed: Sonics: 4.5 Performance: 5
In Search of the Lost Chord: Sonics: 3 Performance: 5
To Our Childrens Childrens Children: Sonics: 4.5 Performance: 3
On the Threshold of a Dream: Sonics: 4 Performance: 4
Question of Balance: Sonics: 4 Performance: 4I'm pleased that I bought all five. Overall, this is an outstanding collection.
