What is great about this album is that Beefheart takes the work from free jazz pioneers like Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman and puts it into a form that is weirdly accessible. He's throwing in elements of the blues and rock and roll and psychedelia to give it context, and then adds his especial poetry, usually with surprising environmental insights. It's right up there with the work of great modern American composers like John Cage, and actually beats Zappa at his own game. Zappa produced Trout Mask, of course, and does a good job, though he tries to turn it into a joke from time to time. But Beefheart isn't joking, he's playing by his own rules. And I don't think he's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet.
