First off, Moon Martin is a favorite of mine and the exception that proves the rule. He was a "band," unlike TVZ who was a solo performer. Certainly not hard to understand unless one wishes to argue for argument's sake? Over several albums, MM wrote, sang, and played great songs which others covered, some to great success. I prefer his versions.
Our definitions of "great" may be part of the problem.
I liked Big Star, Wire, and Pavement a lot but don't think they reached greatness. I like to listen to them occasionally but TO ME there quality hasn't held up the way others have hence my feeling they fail at "greatness." I'd rather listen to the B-52s, PiL, REM, Talking Heads, Pretenders, Blondie, Police... or the Shoes and Records. Berlin? I just like the music a lot, still. Not great but I think it's aged better than many of its contemporaries.
My tastes are as idiosyncratic as anyones and it makes as much sense to split hairs between these bands as it does to argue that ginger is a better flavor than cinammon.
One usually can agree on the greatness of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla...
