This is a gripe of many fans and audiophile mags. They are the only band of their stature that has not had some archival research and an effort to at least attempt to improve the current beatles cd catalog, most of them sound mediocre. I'd say stick with vinyl, but so many records were made in different ways that it's another can of worms. Some say the cd box set (Capitol Vol. 1, with a 2 to follow I suppose) is an improvement, others don't. I like the Beatles and listen to them once in awhile, but I'm not enough of a Beatles nut to track down the best source on each album. Of the cd's I have by them past masters V. 2 sounds the best. I have Parlaphone Lp pressings of white album and sgt pepper and an apple of "yesterday and today" and hey jude but cant really say relative to other pressings how good they are, but they all beat the cd's. I have heard some of the early stuff was recorded way better than many of the available versions do justice (Lp or CD). Other than tinkering with the EQ a bit, I don't see how japanese cd versions could be much different because they sure as hell are'nt going to give them the masters. With Ono's rep of being something of a tightwad when it comes to the beatles catalog money, youd think a reissue program would happen- imagine how many more cd's they would sell. I'd like to hear what someone such as Steve Hoffman could do with the Beatles catalog. He worked wonders on The Doors. If anyone could find the best sounding tapes of their stuff, it is him. He says half the time when he does a project and asks the record company for the master, he gives it back and says no it is'nt.
