35 years ago, my friend Kelli and I, in her dorm room, kept yapping into the wee hours of the morning. We and other friends were going to check out some of Santa Cruz's "other" beaches. Since the dining halls didn't open until 10:00a, Kelli and I did not have to wake up that early. And wouldn't you know it; we woke up to KISS' "Rise To It."
Kelli had an interest in a guy from (a) one of my classes, and (b) the Christian student activity groups of which I was a member and interacted with. From what I knew of the guy, I thought he was, unlike most guys, respectful and nice. With most guys, I shook my head no, and gave warnings to the girls. But with this guy, I nodded yes to Kelli.
While relaxing at the beach, I summoned one of my friends, who was gay. I wanted him to freshen up Kelli's looks. He was half insulted, half honored. He stared for a long while at Kelli. He finally flashed a smile, and said "This should be relatively easy."
It was a Saturday, but Kelli and I did not have plans for that night. So, the gay guy instructed us, upon returning to the dorms, to get cleaned up. Before dinner, he came over to Kelli's dorm room. He trimmed her hair a little, applied some sort of facial cream, drew just a little bit of eyeshadow, and applied a medium-dark shade of red lipstick. Kelli's roommate and I were impressed; a little bit of makeup went a long way. Kelli most definitely was the opposite of KISS in their full makeup days.
Eventually, Kelli did go out with the guy from the Christian clubs. Since that school year ended, and everyone went his or her way, and never saw each other after that, I don't know what ever came of Kelli and that guy.
Anyway, because 1990's pop music shifted to alt-rock, KISS' "Rise To It" did not rise up the charts, did not make a dent. It's not the greatest, but when you need a break from KISS' played-too-often material, break out the straight-forward "Rise To It." And it's up to you, if you want to wear makeup :-)
