Although Duran Duran's "Save A Prayer" was available in late 1982, from the album, Rio, it wasn't until Spring 1985, when the music video came out that it became popular. Back then, we were in 8th grade. The boys rolled dice in Dungeons & Dragons, and played with Transformers. "Save A Prayer" just added to the fantasy. We were having such a good time, we were bummed, that middle school was coming to an end...
Everyone is a middle-aged mom now, so, according to one of my old classmates, the closet she comes to reenacting the "Save A Prayer" video is a mud bath.
Back in the day, there were no green screens. So, the video was shot on location, in some tropical place, which turned out to be Sri Lanka. My relatives in Hawaii (above) felt that their climate most closely matched that of Sri Lanka's.
That video for "Save A Prayer" made jumping into and out of the water look cool. That distinctive Roland SH-2 synthesizer is what gives "Save A Prayer" an otherworldly vibe. Despite the mysticism of the music, lyrically, the song is about a one-night stand!
