40 years ago, we were in middle school. Some households had subscribed to cable TV, and thus were able to watch MTV. Run-D.M.C.'s "King Of Rock" tried to drop the hint that rock music's roots were in Black culture of the blues, gospel, and R&B.
And then, in the 1990s, when we were in college, electives in American Popular Music double-underlined the above. A year-and-a-half before the Run-D.M.C./Aerosmith partnership with Rick Rubin, the former had crafted that sound, in "King Of Rock." And that came from, among others, Whodini.
We recently went back and forth between Oakland and Alameda. Before we lost reception in the tube, some radio station actually played Run-D.M.C.'s "King Of Rock."
