40 years ago, I went with my 8th grade classmate, skinny Helen, to the Macy's at Union Square. Helen appeared to come from a family a little bit better off than most. Nevertheless, she shrugged off the beguiling makeup and jewelry, and even walked past the popular Esprit, Le Sport Sac, Swatch Watch displays.
We were at some trendy boys' clothing section, when some TV played Chaka Khan's remake of Prince's "I Feel For You." Helen gasped, "I love this song," then started to bump and grind against my hip.
"Damn!" I exclaimed, "You don't do that in PE or dances!"
Department stores like Macy's have long struggled. The market has splintered, so that people order online, or, if they need to go into a retail store, the latter has to specialize. So now you have stores like Sephora, which primarily sells cosmetics, but also haircare and skincare products.
I was recently in a Sephora, and Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" played. Yeah, such a song would be targeted towards the moms, but I was surprised, that some college-age kids knew it, and were shaking to it.
Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" features Stevie Wonder on harmonica, and David Frank (of The System) on bass synthesizer. That male vocalist is Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
