10 years ago, I was wrapping up, at my job at Stanford. A colleague and I stumbled upon a then-current track from Asia, "Gravitas: Lento/Gravitas."
I mentioned to my colleague, that when I was a senior at UC Santa Cruz (1992-93), heavy rains ended a long drought. When we heard Asia's "Who Will Stop The Rain," we wanted the rain to last forever! I also told my colleague that, rain or shine, our favorite place to de-stress was Well Within Spa.
On a drizzly day, my colleague and I did go to Well Within Spa. She had only been to Santa Cruz for the Boardwalk, so she was unfamiliar with the town and Well Within Spa. Moreover, the slick Highway 17 made her nervous.
When she found that Well Within Spa was old school and unpretentious, she quickly acclimated. She pointed out that many of Stanford's workers, including ourselves, did not go there as undergrad students. She also whispered that the band Asia were so old, that they probably were part of music classes' curricula.
She mentioned that, while there was no music in the hot tub room, Asia's "Gravitas: Lento/Gravitas" fit the mood. On our way back to the South Bay, we listened to it in the car. As for my audiophile acquaintances, "Gravitas: Lento/Gravitas" is the kind of obscure prog rock they appreciate and enjoy.
