In the late-1970s, when my parents went out, they'd simply ask neighborhood teens to babysit me and my brother. Almost all those babysitters were male, and they pretty much let me and my brother play. The one female babysitter, Christine, went to school up the hill, at Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep.
Yeah, Christine did let me and my bro play. But she also taught us a few things. While making sure that we ate, Christine combined foods, and mixed drinks. Regarding the latter, it was usually milk-based. But once, she had us mix 7-Up with fruits. So, all these years later, when we mix sparkling water with fruit drinks, I think of Christine.
Christine certainly gave the appearance of being a good Catholic school girl. But while the male babysitters let us go wild, Christine would introduce and teach us about music. She was the one who played Cheap Trick's "Surrender," and whispered that our parents were cooler than we thought. She was the one, who said that, out of the four "solo" KISS albums, the Ace Frehley was the best. And, it included a sophisticated-to-me instrumental, "Fractured Mirror."
When my wife and I got married, she insisted that, at the wedding banquet, Frehley's Comet's power ballad, "It's Over Now" be played. When we met during the Fall 1988 semester, that song made her develop a crush on me.
15 years ago, after two kids, my wife came to grips, that she'd always be, um, round and overweight. She want to fracture the mirror, but understood that the mirror was only reflecting what was placed in front of it.
At this time, we discovered that Ace Frehley had added to the "Fractured Mirror" sequence, with another interesting instrumental, "Fractured Quantum." My wife loves "Fractured Quantum," which (a) harkens back to elementary school, (b) adds to "It's Over Now," and (c) makes her come to grips with being done with having kids. And she still dislikes La Croix sparkling water.
