A new-to-me audiophile reached out to me: "Thank you so much for covering music the other audiophiles have no knowledge of. I had no idea who The Ocean Blue were. And they were from Hershey, which isn't far from where I was from, Harrisburg! My niece loves them."
35 years ago, I was a college freshman at UC Santa Cruz. I lived in Crown College's upper quad. Via our "core class," I met fellow Crown froshie, Denise, who lived in the lower quad.
Entering college was hard enough. But I sorely missed my girlfriend, KJ, who was back in the Bay Area. In those days, there was no email or texting. Long-distance phone calls were expensive. And even when you called, what, exactly, could you say, to make things better? As if that LDR wasn't difficult enough, Denise's boyfriend was back in Los Angeles. They hardly saw each other and when they did, there was a reacclimation period. But then Denise had to leave and return to Santa Cruz.
Denise introduced me to the term, "Birds of a feather procrastinate together." Longing for her boyfriend, Denise suggested that she and I commiserate, and go to the beach. We did not know what the obtuse lyrics to The Ocean Blue's "A Familiar Face" were about, but that song intensified our longing for our significant others.
Back in the dorms, Denise and I just could not focus on academics. Denise and I would continue to struggle, in our LDRs, eventually breaking up. TOB's "A Familiar Face" seemed to portend that. After going through our respective breakups, Denise and I would find clearings on campus, overlooking the Monterey Bay. With "A Familiar Face" in our psyche, we tried to let go.
35 years later, I've never stopped listening to "A Familiar Face," a deep cut which remains a favorite of mine.
