35 years ago, I went home to San Francisco for a weekend. I was over at a friend's house. In order to make more room for guests, the parents threw down artificial turf on the fire escape. Some radio station played a song, which sounded like Phil Collins on drums and backing vocals.
The next weekend, I stayed at UC Santa Cruz, but my friend Liza wanted to go to the Boardwalk. Because this was autumn, the Boardwalk did operate a few rides on weekends. And it turned out that my favorite was the over-the-air Sky Glider.
When Liza and I got back to campus, we intended to eat dinner at her dining hall. Since we were grimy and salty, we first showered in her dorm. After dinner, we got back to Liza's room. I believe it was VH1, which aired a video for Stephen Bishop's "Walking On Air." And that was the song with Phil Collins on drums and backing vocals.
It seemed that AC such as "Walking On Air" would last forever. Alas, when the calendar flipped to 1990, alt-rock supplanted genres like AC. Ever since then, "Walking On Air" has faded from the public's memory.
