As mentioned in a post below, we have friends and relatives, who currently attend college, including Los Angeles' USC.
Last year, one of my brother's in-laws took a class at USC, which covered the Beastie Boys' 1989 album, Paul's Boutique. She says that the professor said that, in the late-80s, the Beastie Boys left New York, and relocated to L.A. They were thus forgotten. But anyway, the songs on Paul's Boutique are an artistic cornucopia of samples. The professor said that, at the time, that made for a dense listen, and the album was not all that popular. Because of the costs of licensing, such an album could not be made today.
But as the 1990s progressed, critics and listeners re-evaluated Paul's Boutique. It became one of hip-hop's greatest albums, and as you can see, now is part of college curriculum.
Geez, when I entered college in 1989, the Beastie Boys' "Shake Your Rump" could occasionally be heard in dorms. It didn't have the "cool" factor of other hip-hop artists. So having it be taught in college classes just feels weird to those of us, who were there when it first came out.
