A quarter century ago, Y2K prep was grabbing everyone's attention. Here in San Francisco, landlords were taking advantage, and jacking up both residential and commercial rents. CD sales were peaking, but at the same time plateauing. High-end audio refused to evolve or adjust. Brick-and-mortar stores thus got squeezed, between rising rents and a customer base which was not getting larger, younger, or more diverse.

So it was easy to miss or overlook Van Morrison's "Precious Time." I happened to hear it, because Rasputin Records on Powell was playing its album, Back On Top. You'd think that audiophiles would have latched on to it, but like regular folk, they, too, missed it.
