Oh man. 35 years ago, Xiaoning (in white) was a dormmie at UC Santa Cruz. She was from Southern California. At the end of that Fall 1989 quarter, Xiaoning's family, including her kid sister (bottom) and cousin (left), came up from L.A.
Not in this photo was Xiaoning's brother. He played something, which was new to me. That turned out to be 3rd Bass' "Steppin' To The A.M."
Colleges (such as Stanford, above) now include 3rd Bass in popular music history. They were one of the first interracial hip hop acts, to garner any acclaim. DJ Richie Rich was Jamaican-American. Pete Nice had actually graduated manga cum laude in English, from Columbia University. MC Serch was Jewish, and would help discover the rapper, Nas.
