When I attended UC Santa Cruz from 1989 to 1993, friends and classmates used to claim that they had seen dolphins of the coast. In all my years living in San Francisco and Santa Cruz, I never saw a dolphin.

I would sit on top of the "Flying IUD," point to the southwest, and tell my friends that my relatives came from, and still were in, Hawaii. My maternal grandfather came from Maui. If he went to the leeward shores, that area between Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai had dolphins.

25 years ago, Keola Beamer came out with the beautiful instrumental, "Blue Water Dolphin." This song actually was about those dolphins, off the leeward coat of Maui!
