While I attended UC Santa Cruz from 1989-1993, I actually did not go to Tea House Spa. The latter was renovated, in the mid-to-late 1990s. It has looked the same, for a quarter century.
In 1999, Dancing Cat Records, which specialized in Hawaiian music, was based in Santa Cruz. On this label, Keola Beamer came out with a new album, Kolonahe. The leadoff track, "Ku'u Lei Awapuhi," is about a fragrant ginger lei.
So we were hoping that Tea House Spa's garden had a ginger plant :-) We can't believe that this comforting song is now 25 years-old.
