In the summer of 1994, my cousin Leilani was an undergrad, at the University of Hawaii. She was living in one of those off-campus "gulag-style" apartment buildings, near the Pagoda floating restaurant. Note that her shower, which did not have a tub, had a faucet, more than a foot above the floor. This is so that you can rinse/wash your bathing suit, swim fins, goggles, bucket, fish net, and other salty or sandy items.
At this time, Leilani loved chilling, to the gorgeous "Shells," by Keola Beamer.
If you put Hawaiian sand under a microscope, you will find that it consists of bits of lava, coral, sea urchin spines, wood, seaweed, and seashells. Beamer's "Shells" is actually about a woman, who dove for shells off of Waikiki Beach. She was drowning, lying on the coral reef. Beamer's grandfather rescued her. And when the woman came to, she was kind of disappointed, at being awakened from a wonderful dream she was having.
Regardless, Beamer's "Shells" was played at my wedding banquet. My guests from Hawaii knew it, but everyone else wondered what that beautiful and dreamy song was.
