30 years ago, coffee shops were rising in popularity. But then I went to my second home, Honolulu. Costco had Keola Beamer's then-new CD, Wooden Boat. This helped to put contemporary Hawaiian music on the map.
It wasn't a wooden boat, but from a boat, I dove into the calm Hawaiian waters. The calypso flavor of Beamer's "Hemo Da Kope Bean" certainly helped.
"Hemo Da Kope Bean" means to separate, or pick, the ripe coffee bean from the plant.
Back in 1994, Kona was known for its coffee. While I don't have relatives in Kona, my late grandmother was from the the Big Island, Kohala to be exact. My first cousin still lives in lush and rainy Hilo. We still listen to Beamer's "Hemo Da Kope Bean," which, in the late-90s, I actually played at audio stores.
