In the late 1970s, the neighborhood kids loved Funkadelic's "(Not Just) Knee Deep." But as the 80s took over and progressed, you never heard it.
And then, 35 years ago, as seniors, we had our very last high school parties. My friends Angela, Candace, and Tanya were about to enter UC Santa Barbara. At their party, whoever was DJing played De La Soul's "Me Myself and I," which is musically based on Funkadelic's "(Not Just) Knee Deep." That felt good, and made us cautiously optimistic about the future.
Nowadays, because of internet radio and streaming, we hear both Funkadelic's "(Not Just) Knee Deep" and De La Soul's "Me Myself and I."
