In the 1980s, without calling ahead, we'd sometimes just swing by, and ring your doorbell. If you were out, no biggie. And if you were in, being surprised was not necessarily a bad thing.
My friend Solomon was an only child, and like me, only had male cousins nearby. Until the late-80s, just guys would come over.
But in the late-80s, we started to have more female than male friends. And when the girls came over to Solomon's house, his mom perked up. His mom felt free to do more "girlie" activities, such as baking. Well, having more mouths, female or male, to feed also encouraged Solomon's mom to cook different dishes, and in larger portions.
IDK, something about having some girls over inspired Solomon's mom to bust out music, something I never saw her do in years past. 35 years ago in Spring 1989, she had some new Neil Diamond, including "This Time." Slow and mellow, "This Time" made Solomon's mom relax, while cooking for us.
One of our girls observed Solomon's mom in such a good. The girl whispered in Solomon's ear, "Hey, you better watch your parents; they might give you a little brother or sister!"
Solomon just laughed, "My parents are cool. I'll be off to college soon, but if I ever become an older brother, you're damn well right I'd come home often, to see and take care of the baby!"
As for Neil Diamond's "This Time," we didn't hear it much, if at all. So kudos to Solomon's mom, for sharing it with us.
