During the Fall 1988 semester, we were all in high school. One day, several of us took the 38-Geary bus, out to Lands End. Because we were in a drought, we had clouds, but not much rain. As we walked down to the water, our Walkmen had spotty radio reception. Some station played Kenny G's new song, "Silhouette." We shared earbuds and headphones, and instantly recognized it as Kenny G.
And when we learned that it was called "Silhouette," my friend Rida went, "Eew, my mom uses Silhouette maxi pads!"
But that outburst put a crack in the taboo, about menstruation.
Since most of my friends were nerd girls, many would get into UC Berkeley. Regardless of college, once we got there, menstruation was a major topic. My daughter's godmother was in an all-girls dorm at UCB's Stern Hall. Years ago, she asked me, what it was like for me to live in a coed dorm. Because UCB only guarantees housing for freshmen, that was her only year in dorms. After that, she had to find off-campus housing.
We are of the age, where many of our kids are now in college. On a recent return to UCB, we heard Kenny G's "Silhouette," and it was almost as if we were back in undergrad. Hey, if my daughter's godmother were to live in the dorms now, she'd be the life of the party, Kenny G or not!
