Jason Becker, "Air"

In 1987-88, my friends had learned about local Bay Area band, Cacophony. It was basically a vehicle for the two guitarists, Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, to show off their shredding.

When the 1988-89 school year started, my friend Skull made the short walk to Stonestown's Tower Records, and found a new album from Jason Becker, Perpetual Burn. He would bring that cassette, whenever we went out to play sports. The album was full of dense shredding, so that was why "Air" was such a counterpoint. It starts off with keyboards, giving it a symphonic atmosphere. And then, it's classical picking, before the keyboards come back gently, for the last half a minute.

But you see, over half of my friends were nerd girls. And some of these were in our high school's orchestra. I think it was Grace, who remarked that "Air" sounded like Bach. It was difficult to hear through the boombox playing the cassette, but the orchestra girls (correctly) surmised that "Air" was actually a clean-toned electric guitar. And there was an absence of drums and bass.

Most of the time, Grace liked to play catcher. But we also liked to mix it up. One time, Grace was at shortstop, while Mei Sue (above, with the abrasion) was a second baseman. There was a grounder up the middle. As Grace and Mei Sue both went for the ball, Mei Sue went airborne. Taking a cue from Becker's "Air," Big Booty Judy joked, "Welp, she got air!"

In all these years since, no more than 10 audiophiles have written to me about Jason Becker. He would later upon David Lee Roth's backing band. Marty Friedman would join Megadeth. Cacophony's drummer, Deen Castronovo, would join Bad English and Journey.
