Both the Bombino and Vieux Farka Touré shows at the Broadside (New Orleans) were wonderful. It was heartwarming to see such good attendance, Us old timers might remember that through the 80's and 90's New Orleans had a reliable audience for African music. Changes in audiences and the much higher cost of touring have limited appearances in recent years, but perhaps the tide is turning again. I talked to a member of Galactic (who now one the iconic club Tipitina's) who seemed to view the crowd with a touch of envy! Unfortunately there were very few younger people there--pretty much the same situation I encounter whenever I hear live music.
The Broadside is an outdoor venue that sprung up at the beginning of pandemic--an offshoot of the movie theater across the street who initially thought they use it show movies outdoors, but it quickly became an outdoor music oasis in otherwise dark times. They were very open to creative programming, but now that their infrastructure (and thus associated carrying costs) have grown so much, I fear they will be much less open to performers who won't draw big crowds going forward.
