Caterina Valente was born in France to Italian parents. Eventually, she spoke six languages, and sang in eleven. In the late 1950s, she was one of the top-selling female singers in Germany, and IIRC her best-selling single still holds the record.
So here she is with paisano Dean Martin (Cocetti); but he was from Ohio.
The have an intimate little get-together on a swing I would have to call "Second Empire" in terms of style.
I am flabbergasted by (i) the quality of her sung Brazilian Portuguese (which is different from all the other Portuguese dialects); (ii) she never misses a beat on the guitar; and (iii) she does a comedy sketch while playing and singing.
Now, I was a little monster as a teenager, with a sense of humor beyond Sophomoric. E.g., I would tell people, at age 14, that I planned to get a PhD in History, and that I already had my Dissertation Topic picked out:
"The Position of Women
Under Henry VIII"
So, perhaps it is just me. But at the end, is Dean Martin trying to crack up Caterina Valente with orgasm jokes or references?
ciao,
john
