In the mid-60s, before we were born, Bob Lind had an international folk hit, with "Elusive Butterfly." Since that song was part of our parents' past, we heard it.
During the 1992-93 school year at UC Santa Cruz, my friend Giana (we called her "Jia") lived in a dorm. I think her birthday was around Halloween. But anyway, we celebrated her birthday in her dining hall. Outside the windows, you can see the campus redwood trees.
That year, I lived in the Crown-Merrill apartments, but this time, we had some high-end audio products. So obviously, everyone wanted to come over. A really really good Oldies radio staton played Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly," which made Giana cry. After the song ended, Giana gathered herself, and provided an explanation. (1) Since she had turned 21, "Elusive Butterfly" made her feel old. (2) "Elusive Butterfly" reminded her of her unrequited love, and further, she had no one at all!
Well, not only is Bob Lind still alive, but in 2022, he came out with a new album, Something Worse Than Loneliness. We like "Roll The Windows Down," which, unlike the album title or "Elusive Butterfly," is actually upbeat and positive, even if it sounds a bit breezy and nostalgic.
