The 1992-93 school year got off to a roaring start, with Rozalla's "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)."
But here's the thing. Back then, most audiophiles were working adults. They most certainly were not at high school and college dances, where Eurodance was starting to take root, in the U.S.
I was a senior at UC Santa Cruz. From campus, you always wanted to fly, like Peter Pan, across the Monterey Bay.
30 years ago, in November 1992, Rozalla's "Are You Ready To Fly" was another dance sensation. It made the indoor dances feel like the roof had been removed.
The next day, with "Are You Ready To Fly" still reverberating in our minds, bodies, and souls, Maile and I went down to the beach. A storm was still hundreds of miles offshore. In the late afternoon [we were on Standard Time], Maile stepped into the water. "Cold AF!" she yelled.
She looked across the Monterey Bay, and said, "It looks like we're in Kona or Lahaina!"
With Rozalla's "Are You Ready To Fly" playing in my mind, I pointed to the southwest, and said, "Well, we can fly to Hawaii in a little less than 5 hours!"
