I think if you divide up the century into thirds the general consensus among those that saw them perform would be that the first part of the century would be Jolson. In the mid century certainly Garland and Presley come to mind and finally Jackson would be the dominate name of great entertainers in the latter part. I was never the right age to have seen Ms. Garland in her prime but thank God we have videos like this one to remind us what a rare talent she was.....
