Had the privelege of seeing Joe Lovano lead a quartet including Kenny Barron, George Mraz and Victor Lewis in a Monk tribute, part of the Cleveland Tri-C Jazz festival, last night. I don't know if this quartet or some iteration thereof will be playing Monks music anywhere else, but if so it's well worth checking out. Great musicianship and music, no surprise there. But the real treat was watching Victor Lewis, whom I'd never seen, and marveling at the amount of music he gets from a drum set with such an economy of motion. Pretty sensational, IMHO.
