Don't give up on this genre of music after one experience with one composer and one company. Put some money aside to see a professional company performing an opera by one of the two Italian masters: Puccini or Verdi. The music is much more robust and dramatic (closer to "Carmen" than to Mozart's style), and the impact of seeing a live performance with proper staging, scenery, costumes, and performers will stay with you a long time after the curtain falls.Try getting a recording of the opera and listen to it a few times before seeing it live. If you don't want to invest in a purchase, visit the library. You will be more familiar with the tunes and plot, and derive much pleasure from the beauty of live singing compared to a recording.
I didn't like opera for a long time, although I have enjoyed classical music since early childhood. After I saw "Aida", I was hooked. Mozart was the only one who let me down, as well. I love so much of his instrumental music (it's so PERFECT), but I find his opera somewhat prissy and boring, even silly. Beethoven's only opera is kind of clunker, too. Perhaps the buttoned-up Germans just can't let loose as well as the Italians.
