Fortunately, I have access to the Naxos Online Music Library, so I can quickly sample most composers and their works. Currently listening to Rheinberger. Couldn't find Ollson or Bossi in the Naxos catalog. Rats.
Your psychological explanation for why the French excelled in this genre of music sounds good to me. There is something very primitive and powerful about the pipe organ that is beyond words. I can not explain to someone why I play this music at 'live' levels. Just feels right. Fortunately I do not share walls with my neighbors, though I'm sure the sound reaches them anyways. Thanks to Muse Electronics for their Model 18 subwoofer; I couldn't live without it.
