Tadlo,In my memory, Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1765(?))- is alsways referred t as the most prolific composer. Telemann lived at the same time as JS Bach (1685-1750) and actually beat Bach to a Kapellmeister post.
I read that it would take a copyist 65 years to copy all of Bach's works, but Telemann, who lived almost 20 years longer, wrote even more complete compositions than anyone else- 800 or so. I recently bought a set of the complete works of J.S. Bach and this is 155 CD's.
The Baroque produced more than one very prolific composer: Vivaldi is quipped as having "written the same concerto 600 times", Scarlatti and his 550 keyboard Sonatas.
Haydn with his 105 Symphonies, 80? String Quartets, dozens of piano and string trios, must approach the record for the length of time his works add to.
Moart though he lived only to 35, still wrote over 600 works while Beethoven Opus number go to what- 135? and there's perhaps 60 WoOs? As a comparison to the 155 CD complete Bach, the sister set of the complete Mozart is 170 CD's.
Schubert lived only to 31 and ther's those 550 amazing Lieder plus the Symphonies, huge scale piano works, Masses and so on. Imagine if he'd lived to 70,..
Interesting that in Classical music there is still sometimes the highest quality in large quantity and fast work.
