While acknowledging his son Carlos was a talented musician, Erich Kleiber discouraged him from a career in music, and persuaded him to study chemistry instead. Carlos began his conducting career under an assumed name so he would not embarrass his father. According to the author of his obituary, Carlos Kleiber's recording of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is considered to be the definitive version by many experts.
