Don caught a lot of heat for being a Vegas Kanaka, and in the middle of his career had a pretty serious Working Problem (the curse of the drinking class; I saw him then and he was all puffy, full of fluid), but Don was a seriously nice guy. When I did meet him, I was playing backup for my pal Liko Martin. Don had a big show in a fauncy club down on Lewers Street, and in the back of the room had a surprisingly good recording booth. He would make this available, along with in-house engineeer, to musicians he thought had talent, which Liko had and has. Free of charge. Hippie me was ready to dis him, but the guy was so personable to all of us, so earthy, I ended up sympathizing with his plight. He shed the Working Problem, and I heard a recording of his show yonks later, where in his patter he spoofed the bluehair composition of his audience. "We like to announce the show at the end," he said, "for those of us who may have forgotten where we are."
"And we like to announce the show at the beginning, for those of us who may not be here at the end."
The bluehairs stood up and cheered. Now I'm one, and I hope I would too.
A Hui Hou, Don.
Aloha Nui Loa,
Poinz
