Swedish jazz is not an oxymoron. During the 50's, there were many great Swedish jazz musicians including Lars Gullin, one of the great baritone saxophonists of all time, and to a lesser degree his frequent collaborator Arne Domnerus, who leads the Jazz at the Pawnshop group. I also admit to a partiality for the vibes and find the music on Jazz at the Pawnshop pleasant to listen to, if not ranking with the best work of other Swedes like Gullin. To hear some really great Swedish jazz, listen to the Dragon set (I believe they are up to volume 9 now) of Gullin, including sets where he plays alongside visiting Americans like Chet Baker and James Moody.
In fact, the renaissance of Swedish jazz during the 50s probably owes a great deal to James Moody, who spent a couple of years there between 1949 and 1951.
